What lies behind organic labelling?
For those of us who believe in the idea of organic foods, what happens to us when we see that a product is labelled "organic"? Being that we are consumers who only see the end-product that is for sale on the shelf, it's hard to know what such labelling really means; is it naive of us to unassumingly trust in its wholesomeness, the very idea which organic labeling engenders?
Surprisingly, or disappointingly not so, it turns out that a small conglomerate of major food megaproducers lie behind some of the more prominenet organic labels that we have come to know. Consider:
Cascadian Farm, Muir Glen, Gold Medal Organic = General Mills
Odwalla = Coca-Cola
After the Fall, Santa Cruz Organic, R.W. Knudsen = J.M. Smucker
Nature's Farm = Tyson Foods
Morningstar Farms, Kashi, Keebler Organic, Kellogg's Organic = Kellogg
Back to Nature, Boca Foods = Kraft Foods
...and soon to join the fray...the dreaded juggernaut Wal-Mart...
Does this mean that the more diligent among us should boycott using these brands too? That is a personal decision, but it seems that the noble idea of "organic" is no longer immune from the inroads of corporatization...is nothing sacred?
